University of Texas at San Antonio COEHD to Host Four Summer Camps
The UTSA College of Education and Human Development will host four camps this summer, focusing on literacy, writing, and STEM education.
The Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies (CITL) is hosting the Roadrunner Readers mentoring program for children in the San Antonio area from second through sixth grade. For two weeks, participants will work one-on-one with current UTSA graduate students to develop the literacy skills of children and young people who need support in reading comprehension. Additionally, two Roadrunner Readers camps will also be offered this summer, one in partnership with Sarah King Elementary School and the other in partnership with Urban Strategies.
“Roadrunner Readers starts with the understanding that each child comes to school with valuable experiences and knowledge,” said Dr. Samuel DeJulio, assistant professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching. “The mentor focuses on learning who the child is, what she or he knows, and what she or he cares about. This guides the mentor in building a curriculum around the child and his or her world.”
“At its core, we hope the children recognize that they can be agents in their own learning and they can be agents of change in their worlds,” added DeJulio.
